In the course of fast food history, the big chains have blessed us with a few extra-special concoctions that, upon their availability, absolutely electrified the public. We swoon yearly over the reintroduction of the McRib. KFC’s Double Down sandwich was such a big deal that former NY Times’ food critic Sam Sifton reviewed it. 2012 brings us Taco Bell’s big splash–the Doritos Locos Taco–a Taco Bell taco with a shell flavored like a Nacho Cheese Dorito.
OMG! Is it really that magical time of year again? You’re darn tootin’ it is. It’s National Popcorn Day! That’s right, today is some day that some marketing exec at some snack manufacturer dreamt up to boost popcorn sales. Celebrate good times, come on!
When it comes to my snacking choices, a lot of the time I like to keep it classy, with fancy cheeses & pheasants & whatnot. The rest of the time I swing lowbrow, consuming my weight in Combos & Slim Jims & Hostess Sno Balls.
When I was but a wee scallywag, my mom sent me off to school each day with a lovingly packed lunch and let’s say 36% of the time, that lunch included a Slim Jim. On the days when it did contain one, I’d sit at the cafeteria lunch table munching on my Slim Jim and hoping to impress the popular kids. I always kept “Macho Man” Randy Savage’s cry of “SNAP INTO IT!” to myself though. It was difficult but necessary for popularity reasons.
Ever since I attended the Salsa Slam & consumed a criminal amount of salsa earlier this month, I’ve had a very serious condition that actual medical doctors refer to as “salsa on the brain” or “salsa fever.” The symptoms include severe reactions to tomato withdrawal & cilantro breath. As a result, this past weekend, when I came across Zesty Salsa Tortilla Combos at my local bodega, I was virtually helpless & due to my condition, had to purchase a bag.
The NFL season doesn’t start for another month, but the fake NFL season begins this Tuesday, when EA releases Madden NFL 11, the latest edition of their ridiculously popular football video game. To get folks in the mood, fresh off the creation of their Ballpark Nacho Fritos, the folks at Frito Lay have developed another sports-themed snack, Stadium Nacho Doritos, one of two new Doritos flavors (along with Tailgate BBQ) that are “inspired by Madden NFL 11.”
It sure has been a guactasmic week, hasn’t it, NachosNY devotees, hangers on & such? Were you on the Guac Rock boat on Monday night, cruising around the harbor drinking beers, eating guac & listening to live, independent rock music? Oh man…I was and let me tell you, for the most part, you who joined me were an ATTRACTIVE group of guac lovers. I would’ve gladly made out with many of you.
