Did you know that Buzz Aldrin didn’t eat nachos in space? Same with Neil Armstrong. Same even goes for Stretch Armstrong (toy or band). The tradition of astronauts not eating nachos as changed for the better. I happened to come across this picture of a Space Commander’s nachos in Space.
If you’re like me, when you updated your podcasts this week, a new episode from the Sporkful came up all about nachos. The Sporkful is already a delightful listen, but this week was a special treat.
These nachos were a huge surprise, which won’t surprise you when you see the iPhone photos of them. I spent my day buying fluffy pillows at IKEA and wanted a burger, so we stopped at two8two Burger in Cobble Hill. When I came back from the restroom, Nozomi said “You’re going to be excited.” I was, strictly because there was nachos on this menu.
In the course of fast food history, the big chains have blessed us with a few extra-special concoctions that, upon their availability, absolutely electrified the public. We swoon yearly over the reintroduction of the McRib. KFC’s Double Down sandwich was such a big deal that former NY Times’ food critic Sam Sifton reviewed it. 2012 brings us Taco Bell’s big splash–the Doritos Locos Taco–a Taco Bell taco with a shell flavored like a Nacho Cheese Dorito.
OMG! Is it really that magical time of year again? You’re darn tootin’ it is. It’s National Popcorn Day! That’s right, today is some day that some marketing exec at some snack manufacturer dreamt up to boost popcorn sales. Celebrate good times, come on!
Nachos NY has been a passion project for the past three years. Along the way, we’ve learned so much about our favorite food, nachos. We’ve also had a lot of fun hosting Guactaculars, Salsa Slams, Guac Rocks, nacho crawls and even El Grito (look that one up if you’re curious). We’ve gotten the opportunity to meet amazing people and work with amazing companies and now we’re taking the next step.
