After being alerted by Jenny Miller (namedrop) about Domo Taco’s Nacho Tots, I decided I needed to try these out. We’ve been duped before by the word Nacho, so I went to try them. The review was put on the backburner as we wrote up other things and announced the Guactacular. (By the way, you should probably buy your tickets soon, if you’re planning to come.) While I was waiting, Shawn tried them as well. We both found them unconventional, so we decided to blog about them unconventionally, through an IM.

Shawn: dude! i finally got to check out those crazy japanese nacho tots at the domo taco truck!

Shawn: they were totally on park ave & 23rd last week!

Lee: I saw them at union square. I wanted to make you eat them but I thought I would take one for the team and try them.

Shawn: oh yeah? were you skeptical of their tastiness?

Lee: I always doubt international takes on nachos (kimchi taco truck)

Lee: It’s tough to make something else nacho-y

Shawn: i hear you. as a (significant part) irishman, i’m skeptical of the irish nacho.

Lee: have you not had good irish nachos?

Shawn: i have, but i always feel like “is this REALLY nachos?”

Lee: i think irish nachos qualify and i am pretty open with what I might call nachos, but i just don’t like when it feels too forced

Shawn: so the domo truck take on nachos felt forced to you?

Lee: yea.

Shawn: i have to agree actually.

Lee: They could have been japanese tots

Lee: and that would have gimmick-less and also not very interesting

Shawn: they did have a lot of flavor though.

Shawn: every time i took a bite, i never knew if i was going to get salty or sweet.

Shawn: that was pretty cool.

Shawn: but yeah….

Shawn: totally gimmicky.

Lee: each bite was not great though

Lee: the top was very fishy

Shawn: true.

Shawn: you had to get the right mix of potato & cheese & sauce & what was that flaky stuff? seaweed, right?

Lee: bonito flakes

Shawn: ah. right.

Shawn: definitely fishy.

Shawn: so was it a one time thing for you?

Lee: yea

Lee: i don’t think I will be going back for that

Lee: I also wish I knew what to use that container for too

Shawn: cricket terrarium?

Lee: then I would have to make cricket nachos eventually

Shawn: cricket nachos!

Lee: will you go back to domo?

Shawn: yeah…

Shawn: for the tacos though.

Those look a lot like takoyaki, but with tater tots in place of the octopus balls. If you visit again, ask where they’re from. My money’s on Osaka.

Also, man do I miss tots…
