Shawn is the mastermind behind eat!drink!snack! He eats, drinks, rambles and has absolutely no problem with being your snack monkey. In this column, A Queso The Munchies, Shawn will be reviewing any and every snack he can find that’s deemed “Nacho” or nacho-related.

When it comes to my snacking choices, a lot of the time I like to keep it classy, with fancy cheeses & pheasants & whatnot. The rest of the time I swing lowbrow, consuming my weight in Combos & Slim Jims & Hostess Sno Balls. This past weekend, I found myself out in Brooklyn on Smith Street drinking beers with a friend and once we left the bar, we ended up at a bodega searching for lowbrow late night munchies.

After much hemming & hawing & foggy indecision, I left with a bag of Utz Cheesier Nacho Tortillas in my hand. At $1.69 for a four-ounce bag, they’re just about as lowbrow as you can get with a bag of chips, making them the perfect snack for after an evening of drinking. I mean, I guess that technically you don’t have to be drunk to enjoy them, but what’s the fun in that?

Basically, they’re a lighter, crispier version of Nacho Cheese Doritos, as they’re straight-up corn chips covered in copious amounts of cheese powder. In this case that powder’s a mix of Parmesan & cheddar cheeses. Other than that, they don’t really make an effort to add in any nachoesque ingredients, unless you count “tomato” or “onion,” which are both listed in the ingredients. I don’t mean to nitpick but since they don’t list those ingredients as “tomato powder” or “onion powder,” that technically means that there should’ve been chunks of tomato & onion in the bag. There were neither…LAME. The chips are coated with five different types of food dyes and both disodium inosinate & disodium guanylate though, so if you like those in your snacks, these are perfect for you.

I thought they were much better than Nacho Cheese Doritos but then again, I was a bit inebriated & ravenous at the time. In your case, next time you’re inebriated & ravenous & are in a bodega searching for snacks & only have $2 to spend, I hope you think of Utz and their “Cheesier” Nacho Tortillas.
