This Was Salsa Slam

This sight brings tears to my eyes.
Before I get into a Salsa Slam recap, I want to make sure I thank everyone. Heather and Julio at the Bell House made sure I never went crazy. Marla from 5 Burro Cafe was amazing to donate a prize for the Judge’s Favorite while also giving a $20 gift certificate for everyone who competed. Nozomi, Maraysa, Dan, Joby and Jon had my back making sure everything ran what I’d call ultra-smoothly. Mariachi Real De Mexico shocked and awed the crowd. Rob from The Brooklyn Salsa Company came bearing more gifts of incredible salsa. Sean and Kristy came in last minute with beautiful slate from Brooklyn Slate. The awesome crews of the Village Voice and Scout Mob made sure everyone was entertained while not eating. The judges chose fairly and judiciously. And 17 of the coolest people I can say I know made a ton of salsa with not a lot of time (most of the competitors joined this competition in the last week).
So Salsa Slam was a basically a feast for all senses. Between the Mariachis, which were even cooler than I could have even imagined, and the salsas with the winner of it all being someone who didn’t join the competition until Friday night, this was really a great night. I have some great photos (even more on Jon’s flickr) to share with you, but first you must be dying to know who won so you can look forward to their recipes in the next week.
Judge’s Favorite: Sarah Alvarez (#11) with Tia Arkie’s Chile (Thanks Natasha Ryan / Metromix)
People’s Champion: Analucia Gutierrez (#17) with Zapo Salsa
People’s Runner-up: Lindsay Liu (#6) with Mango Salsa
I leave you with some photos of the night. I’ll add even more tomorrow when the great slideshows come from Metromix and the Village Voice. Thanks again everyone!

I’m so bummed I missed it! Those little shots of salsa are an amazing idea! They look delicious!
what a fun sunday it was! so glad that #17 was a crowd favorite (especially since i voted for it) and i’d like to think that all the mexican food i’ve consumed over the past few years should give me *some* salsa snobbery/ tasting abilities! i also loved that heat and the cinnamon salsa. overall i was impressed by just how different the salsas were – i learned that some interpretations of what salsa is deviated greatly from your average tomato-based mixture. looking forward to the next nacho-related event!
[...] We sat on picnic benches for a few moments to digest, only to realize that if we didn’t leave promptly we’d miss our bus back to the city. And so, apple cider and donuts in hand, we rushed to the car, my mom drove to the bus stop and BT and I wobbled onto our bus. A bit too full but very content, I napped most of the ride and tried to find a bit of space in my stomach for the next stop on the Catskills-to-Brooklyn food tour: Salsa Slam. [...]
