Tortilla Flats

After a mini-hiatus to the NJ shore (don’t worry, my taste buds are still fully on task with a Taco Pizza post on the way), I decided to get back in the saddle with a trip to Tortilla Flats with Margarita Consultant Maraysa. From what I heard before, they have a Bingo night along with all the kitch one could handle.

We sat outside and received a basket of tortilla chips of good thickness and a surprisingly spicy salsa. The waitress caught me off-guard, asking if we wanted a side of guacamole or queso to go with our chips; I nearly said yes and remembered the task at hand of nachos. So we ordered the nachos with a side of guacamole and waited for our also ordered margaritas to hit the table.

The margaritas came and quenched my salsa-burnt tongue and moments later, the nachos arrived.

Immediately, you’ll notice that its of the pizza style and usually I rail against that, but I just saw glimmering cheese waiting for my mouth to destroy. And it helped that the waitress got all gushy about it and LOVED when I told her it was a journalistic expedition.

The first bite reminded me of the beginnings of my nacho expedition, the hope of finding a delicious nacho. This was delicious. All it needed was a good strong chip, a little beans, a well-placed and delightfully spicy jalapeno and a coating of cheese and I was in nacho heaven. Add to that, a bit of fresh guac and boom; TOP 5. It was the perfect appetizer nacho.

Oh right, and the free after meal tequila shot would never cloud my judgement.

Like Lee, it had been a while since my last nacho endeavor—even longer since my last margarita endeavor! I thought you couldn’t go wrong with sharing a pitcher of margaritas with only two people, but I am so sad to say I was wrong. The taste of this frozen margarita was nothing more than average, and the amount of foam found in the pitcher after 5 minutes on the table didn’t help.

Because I am an old lady and haven’t been able to do shots of straight liquor since I was 19, I threw my free-post-meal tequila shot into the last of my margarita. That was the lone bright spot of this margarita—making it stronger to make the lack of taste less frustrating. Sorry to sat that Tortilla Flat’s margaritas are not as delicious as their pizza style, perfect appetizer nachos!
