Queer Theory Reunion
Over July 4th weekend, I ran away from New York City. However, I could not turn my back on nachos. I spent about a week in Minneapolis, Minnesota visiting with friends, wandering through Uptown, and sampling some of the city’s nacho offerings. One place I had nachos was at Hard Times. While the company was divine, my high hopes for vegan ‘chos were sadly squashed.
First off, I want to say that I love Hard Times. They have great, cheap food and are open until 4am. It’s a great place to stop after a show at the 400 Bar or just an evening of misbehaving on the West Bank. It was also a great alternative place to get your homework done. All of it’s food is vegetarian and no meat is on the premises. They also state they can make almost anything vegan. I was pumped, hoping this meant vegan cheese (even though I would have to skip the sour cream). However, the “vegan option” was chips without cheese. Bogus. Maybe they should check out our recipe for vegan nachos.
So I was bummed about the lack of vegan cheese but the salsa was bad ass. Also, I have come to like finding the occasional chick pea on my ‘chos. The price also fit my tight budget. At $5 a plate, I had to have plate-cleaning helpers. The place is obviously not a Mexican restaurant or an Irish pub so these nachos aren’t going to make it into my favorites. For what they were, however, I enjoyed them and if I were to relocate back to the Twin Cities I might order them again sometime.
Many thanks to all of those who showed up that night at Hard Times. It was a class reunion of sorts for those of us who were in “Queer Theory” together at the University of Minnesota. The night also brought together friends and fellow Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies students so we could catch up on the year that had past. So again, thanks everyone! Who knew that theorizing about Judith Butler’s heterosexual matrix of intelligibility would qualify me to blog about nachos?
