A St. Patty's Day Twist on an Old Favorite

18 March 2009 by rachel , , , ,   9 Comments

Wake up nacho lovers! Shake off that St. Patty’s Day hangover and let’s recap the evening.

1. Random number in phone under the alias “Conan O’Brien” Check.
2. Green beads on bed posts. Check.
3. Receipt from Rogue. Ouch Check.

The receipt coupled with some wonderful photos courtesy of Nachos NY guests, Julia and Bob was enough to trigger our memories to what is our first and probably our last review of Irish Nachos.

Before you start sending in the hate mail and call me a hypocrite, I know Irish nachos are not genuine nachos. However, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day we braved the drunken masses and overbearing Irish music, and headed out to Rogue Bar and Restaurant on 6th Ave between 25th and 26th Street.

For those unfamiliar to the Irish Nacho, it usually consists of a potato or waffle fry. Then the plate is doused with cheese, sour cream, bacon, and sometimes for a veggie there’s chives or scallions thrown on for a little color.

Irish Nachos

Yours truly, Princess Guac, was the only person at the table to have previously enjoyed the Irish Nacho. This evening’s “nachos” were a little different than the plates I have had numerous times before. I am used to waffle fries as the substitute nacho chip. However, these actually had baked potato slices. Therefore, you could not eat these nachos with your hands. A fork and knife was a necessity and I hate breaking out utensils. But the cheese, oh lordy the cheese was divine. GOUDA cheese on Irish nachos. I was skeptical at first but the cheese was by the far the best part. The sour cream was a little over powering and the bacon was forgettable.

All sorts of crazy

There were four of us total, yet we still had a hard time finish off a plate. After a few bites, the “nachos” were filling us up fast. It’s a dish you should treat yourself to only once in a while for fear of congestive heart failure. However, at $9 a plate, it was a good late night snack to soak up the Killian’s and the Jameson for those of you out for an enjoyable, raucous March 17th, 2009.Surviving

So maybe my suggestion of corned beef and cabbage nachos wasn’t that far off? Would have gone well with the potato!

these are amazing, and pretty much the only reason to ever go near 6th & 25th St…. it’s a dead zone, except for the Rogue’s Irish Nachos. the smokiness is amazing… the potatoes are thick… unreal they are so good.
